September 21, 2021 10:56 amI have been experiencing great Financial difficulties since my OAS Pension was reduced without prior notice to almost half what it was before the reduction . Is there any hope or light at the end of the tunnel that I may get back to the full amount I was getting before July 2021 ? . SOS . Regards .
PensionExpert
September 22, 2021 11:37 amHi Ahmed,
If you have received CERB or CRB in year 2020, this support payment is currently considered as taxable income by CRA, therefore it will affect your GIS/ALW amount. There has not been any update regarding the status at this point. You must call pension call centre to find out more details.

November 11, 2021 4:49 pmWhat will the maximum CPP benefit be in 2022?
PensionExpert
November 11, 2021 10:12 pmHello Paul,
The maximum CPP monthly payment information is not announced yet. However, our guess is it will most likely increase about $25 per month in 2022. Similar increase based on pass years’ average.

November 13, 2021 10:54 pmI sponsored my father and he became permanent resident of Canada in May 2012. Do we have to wait till May 2022 to apply for OAS/GIS or we can apply in February 2022 or March 2022 since it take 90 Days to process the application? Please advise.
PensionExpert
November 14, 2021 4:04 pmhello Bruce,
You will have to wait until your parent lived the full 10 years in Canada before submitting your application. The reason is that the processing agent will doubt his residency from now until May 2022 and may refuse the application due to insufficient years of residency.

March 23, 2022 4:10 pmAm born raised in Canada , payed taxes whole 70 years of existence had to wait til 65 to receive oas , why all others who enter wait 10?
PensionExpert
March 23, 2022 4:54 pmHello Rick,
If you are talking about the qualification to OAS program. 10 years of residency in Canada is one of the 3 criteria to qualify for OAS program. The other two are to be the age of 65 years and over, and to either hold a Canadian citizen or permanent resident status.

April 23, 2022 7:34 pmHi Rick. You should know that people who apply after 10 years of residency will receive 10/40 of the OAS amount. Those who apply after 20 years will get 20/40 or half the amount. Those here 40 years will get 40/40 or the full amount.

November 14, 2021 10:28 pmHello Penson Expert;
Thanks for the reply.. If we submit the application in May 2022 after completing the full 10 years, Would The OAS/GIS payment will start from May 2022 or when the application is approved which could be August 2022 as the processing could take 90 days or upwards? I mean do they pay retroactively from the date you become eligible?

December 30, 2021 1:18 pmHello. At the end of January, are the OAS/GIS going up 4% to cover inflation?
PensionExpert
December 30, 2021 3:14 pmThere is no news about such a hike in OAS/GIS payment. Normally, the benefit increase is adjusted based on planned inflation rate. We will have to wait for Liberal government’s announcement.
Cameron
December 31, 2021 1:16 pmThe OAS/GIS will increase at the end of Jan.We won’t know the exact amount until the inflation numbers for Dec come in mid Jan.So far the numbers for Oct and Dec would increase the OAS about 1.2%.Depending on what happened in Dec the increase could be slightly higher or lower than 1.2%.

July 26, 2022 8:29 pm1. It is almost the end of day here in Vancouver Wednesday July 27. The Direct Deposit for CPP/OAS/GIS has not arrived. Is the payment delayed?
2. If i decide to reside overseas for studies would I still receive my benefits?
PensionExpert
July 30, 2022 3:10 pmHi,
If you are experiencing any payment delay, it is best to contact pension call centre directly to find out what happens. If you decide to travel or live outside of Canada for an extended period of time, you must let pension office know first and they will let you know if your OAS is subject to foreign resident tax, etc.

January 19, 2023 9:18 pmI have a Question. I started to receive my OAS when I turned 65 in August of 2021. At that time I was still Working and I received the GIS on my OAS payment every month. Then the GIS was taken away because my income was too high to qualify. I understand that. I retired on the 3rd of July this year (2023) and am now only collecting my CPP and OAS pensions. When my income tax is done for 2022 and My income is less than the previous year and considering that my income is within the parameters to qualify once again Do I have to reapply for the GIS or will it be automatically be added onto my OAS pension again.?
PensionExpert
January 20, 2023 10:04 pmHello Sylvia,
The quick answer is yes, you will have to re-apply. CRA do not always share the income information properly. On the safe side, it is at your best interested to call pension call centre to verify. GIS auto-renewal at tax time only applies to those who are already on GIS program.

PensionExpert
June 8, 2023 5:51 pmHello Leonard,
Most likely not, because this benefit payment is technically not considered an income under GIS program. Please contact pension call centre to confirm as each provincial assistant program has different effect on federal pension program.

June 23, 2023 9:16 amMy husband passed away over two years ago. He was receiving over $900.00 in CPP. I’m only receiving about $100.00 of that. When I spoke to a rep from tax department, I was told they add my CPP & his together, that’s why I’m only receiving such a small amount. What should I receive, have anything to do with his? They are two separate entities. My husband & I were both retired. I’d like to know why the government is doing this?

June 28, 2023 4:44 pmHello Dianne,

September 25, 2023 2:59 pmHello my wife and I are no longer compatible, for years now, I pay rent and buy my own groceries, I would like to move out so that I can move on but I’ve been told I don’t qualify for GIS, all I receive is CPP and OAS, combined that’s not enough to pay rent here in Langley BC, How do I get the GIS ?
PensionExpert
September 25, 2023 4:09 pmHello Jim,
I would recommend you to call the pension call centre directly to explain your situation. The agent on the phone will be able to add the new information into your file and start to process to help you qualify for GIS since after a separation, your qualification to GIS will be calculated based on your own income, not the combined spousal income.
